Villasimius drops
down to the sea and from the coast offers one of the most fascinating
views on the Island.
The special shape of the coastline
offers a 270° view over the sea, a stretch of water which
day after day holds our numerous tourists spellbound.
This is
also why you will find several watch towers along the
coast.
In the 16th century they were used to scan the horizon for
the ships of the Barbary pirates who often raided and sacked
these
shores.
Today, these towers have become one of the main landmarks
of Villasimius and Sardinia, the privileged observers of
times gone by, which, if they could only speak, could narrate
a whole
series of epic tales of the history of this Island.
The historical and cultural heritage of Villasimius can also
be studied in the Municipal Archaeological Museum, a building
which houses a rich collection of findings, works and exhibitions
which are carefully presented.
Here the visitor will learn
about the Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman cultures which
over the
centuries marked the history of Sardinia.
Villasimius offers
a lively programme of cultural events including exhibitions
and theme shows of great interest
which visitors
should not fail to attend.
The Villasimius Municipal Library is also well worth a visit; it houses a collection of
8,500 volumes divided into sections, including English, German
and French books
which form a fascinating library of tourism.
